          Unexpected Week Off
Well, it was fun as long as it lasted.  School was out for 7 days not including weekends.  First the power went out, then the snow was to0 deep.  Then the power went out again. There must have been 3-4 feet of snow if not more.  It hasn't snowed this much for a long time.  People where getting snowed in.  There was snow everywhere, especially where bus stops were.  But, we were all happy to have a holiday.

                             4-H

The 4-H group has their meetings on the second Tuesday of every month. At our last meeting we made cup cakes and egg salad sandwiches. The people that came were Misty, Anna, Ty, Asa, and Libbi.
At our most recent meeting, the 4¬¬¬¬-H group met outside since it was a really warm day.  Everyone made it to the meeting except Misty. During the meeting we talked about how much your animal should weigh and how much you should feed them.  We had popsicles that Alicia brought.  The 4-H group is going to sell a yummy treat at the community dinner.  (It is a surprise!)

Fruits & Vegetables

Have you ever woke up in the morning and didn’t know what to eat for breakfast? Here are a couple of thing that you could have to eat: fruits or perhaps a fruit smoothie.
The reason why I bring up fruits and smoothies is because a man named Chris Kennedy came from the UC Cooperative Extension to the Hoaglin Zenia School to talk about fruits and vegetables.
Chris showed us many different things and told how to pick the ripest fruit or vegetables. Then he  cracked open a coconut, and demonstrated how to get the meat out of the coconut. Believe me it’s hard but he makes it look so easy because he’s been doing it for a while.
Chris chopped up many different fruits and put them in individual containers. He gave us some coconut, coconut milk that didn’t taste so good (Asa was the only one that liked it), mango, tangerine, papaya, grapefruit and pineapple. All the fruit tasted very good. It was so good everybody wanted more.
After we all got done with eating every last piece of fruit Chris showed us a new kind of food pyramid. The only difference in this pyramid is that all the groups are not piled on each other; they are side to side of each other. When you look at the poster of the pyramid you can see each of the categories and see which you need the most of.
When I look at the poster I can see that you need more grains and less oil. If you would rank the categories from the ones you need the most to the one you need the less you might be surprised. I know I was. In order it would be something like this: 1. Grains 2. Dairy 3. Vegetables 4. Fruits 5. Meat & Beans 6. Oils.
After we were done talking we students went back to doing our work. Then when we were eating lunch Chris made us some smoothies. Let me tell you they were delicious.

This Town is Still Too Good For Drugs!

Remember our last school year when the H-Z school when our teacher Mrs. Bartlett was teaching the 4-7 graders about the drugs?  Well, she’s been back with us.  We 5-8 graders were working with goals, kicking habits, and learning more about the effects of tobacco products and other drugs.
We as a group wrote and then recited a poem on what tobacco can do to you at our awards ceremony.  It told about the awful things that could happen to you if you used tobacco.  Misty and I read a blurp on how many people die from tobacco. We also designed a bulletin board called “The Truth About Tobacco.” We shared with the parents and community members that were here about the awful truth of the ingredients in tobacco.  That event was on February 14th.
In our class, we watched a movie about 8 teens that smoked a lot of cigarettes, and I mean a lot!  The teens were to stop smoking for 4 weeks and if they completed the journey without cheating, they would get $100!  Chick-ching!
Unfortunately, the program called Too good For Drugs ended.  We were all unhappy that the program ended, it was so fun!  We enjoyed the skits and role plays. Asa complimented that he really had a lot of fun and can’t wait to do it again.  Ty said, “Why does it have to be over?”  I said that it was one of the best things we could have done, Misty said that she liked it, but does not want to do it in high school!
Anyway, just stay drug free everybody.  That way, you can have more fun!
