FIRE COMMUNICATIONS

As of this writing, members of this club are serving in communications on the Hayfork Fire incident. This fire broke out on Saturday, Sept. 1st, increased to 350 acres by late evening. As of Sunday evening around 600 acres was thought to have burned, however, it has been a slow-moving blaze until a big flare-up on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday evening ARES Coordinator W6HOR Bob Buckley was accompanying a Public Information Officer, with KB6WTA Stan Arnold riding with another CDF officer on the fire. The amateur radio folks serve as "shadows" with these officers, passing radio messages on the progress of the fire, and other pertinent information to CDF Base Unit, which was being manned by KF6WLP Pat Arnold and KG6BHZ Raymon Campbell.

Also serving as Trinity Relay was WB6FZH Greg Greenwood. K6QXB Herb Sullivan , KF6OAH Vicky, KA6GSD Art Zacharias, and KE6MGV, Will Drake worked on the Hayfork incident, along with WD6AIA Bob Martin who was Red Cross coordinator on this incident.

Earlier last week a fast-moving fire broke out on Oregon Mountain just west of Weaverville. This fire posed a threat to many homes and the entire town of Weaverville in a matter of minutes. Many of our club members were evacuated from their homes. Our club president, KF6OAH Vicky Riley, was busy with relaying messages on pending evacuations of club members. WD6AIA Bob Martin served with Trinity County Search and Rescue until he was summoned home to evacuate from his home with wife Jayne.

Other evacuees were WD6FHX George and Lillian, WB6JZN Ed Carpenter and KD6QBS Vi, and then I heard a desperate message relayed by the Sheriff's Office that KD6RKJ Tubal needed to be rescued from his mountain residence. I have since heard him on the two-meter, so I know he got rescued!

W6HOR Buck was busy for a couple of days coordinating messages on that incident. WA6BXN Johnny Weil was coordinating Red Cross activities for those needing Red Cross help. There were three amateur radio volunteers from Redding on this incident, also, didn't get call- signs for them. Things have happened so quickly with two fires that I am having trouble catching up!
