This is a TEST ISSUE of the TCARC "ON-LINE" NEWSLETTER

This is a sample of a newsletter written in HTML, the language of the internet files that make up the page you are looking at. The content that our Newsletter Editor, N6TKX, Evelyn wrote for the August 2001 issue has been inserted into this new form. This file was then uploaded to the TCARC website by the Activites Chairperson/Webmaster, and became the online version of TCARC Newsletter.

Then it could have been accessed by those that print and mail our newsletter, a copy printed, then used as a duplication master for the mailed version of our newsletter. TCARC Members can be e-mailed a copy directly, with no printing and mailing costs if they wish to "opt-out" of the mailed issue, the club saves about $4.00 per member. A computer enhances some Ham Radio activities, but at no time will a computer ever be required for fullTCARC membership and activites.

The newsletter file remains on the website in the Newsletter Archive, so anyone around the world can read our current and past newsletters by just clicking on the issue they want. Presently, the old issues have been scanned and the picture of the page was uploaded. This procedure yields a poor quality copy of the newsletter. With this "online" format, every copy is an original, color pictures on the web, half-tone gray on the printed and mailed issue. Yes, pictures, diagrams and other items, like e-mail and website links can be inserted into the text by the publisher for extra features to the on-oline issue..

WB6FZH, Greg wrote and published a 9.5 page newsletter monthly for his club in Hawaii for 7years, until just a few months ago. He does not have the 5 to 15 hours to write/publish a newsletter anymore, but feels he will have time to web-publish a TCARC newsletter written by Evelyn, N6TKX with contributions by other officers and members.

It took about 45 minutes to convert the original August issue of the TCARC newsletter to "online format". The new procedure would be to take Evelyn's file on a disk, or email attatchement, or written word and insert it into this format. If separate, the submitted minutes, submitted treasurer's report, and other items would be provided and inserted. Contributions from members, information stolen from other publications, etc.very easily can be added. It may also inspire folks to contribute content. Under no circumstances are we allowing Evelyn any rest, the good news is that it might actually be a little less work for her!

Greg will immediately show others how to do this (for back-up) as it is a very simple process. Especially since he wrote a "how to" web article that resides on the Hawaii club's website for publishing an on-line newsletter with mailed edition. It is clearly not the intention to do anything but enhance the mailed edition on the internet.

The Activities Chairperson will from time to time use part of the same stamp, and add an "Activity Suppliment to the back-end of the newsletter. This will contain feature materials, reports on some of the special projects, follow-up information to meeting programs and probably some content from several years of publishing the other newsletters.

The newsletter will have a nice clean masthead that will reproduce in gray tones that will incorporate all the usual club information, plus the website URL so anyone that sees our printed newsletter will be able to find our website! The interim masthead used in this issue would be replaced with one reflecting input of members. The publisher just modified the one he had used before. Part of the design could be used as stationary or for informational hand-outs.

TCARC ACTIVITIES SECTION

ARES Needs You!

The TCARC Amateur Radio Emergency Service group led by "Buck", W6HOR, is continuing to work on an updated version of the standardized operational plan that will contain procedures, forms, standards, training information and more. You will not have to learn much of anything new, it will just be in a new form. This will be a great reference so if "Buck" is not availiable, we will just have to have a disaster without him! (Now there is a frightening thought!)

While this relates to the TC ARES members and operations, it will be the same size as the binder that holds the TCARC Member Handbook that is being currently developed You can put them side by side..near your radio.

Speaking of "handbooks" there will be some more information and discussion about the TCARC Handbook at the September Meeting. Both handbooks will be in two forms with exactly the same content, hard copy and "online". It will be in an 8.5 x 11.00 page size format, yes the same as the newsletter, and there will be a section for you to put those too! The other form will be "on-line" on the TCARC Website. Updates will be made online and provided at the meetings, or you can even print your own at home and put them into your handbook.

TCARC WEBSITE UPDATES

Recent updates inclue adjusting the TCARC Club Official Page, to reflect the new offiicers. The ISS/ALPHA article in the Hot Topics Section was updated. This has been used by many folks all over the country to help them contact the International Space Station by packet or voice. Infact, the URL of the article was itself "digipeated" from the space station by WB6FZH, and we received feed back from Arizona, Redding, San Jose, San Rafael, etc.that it was received. The Field Day 2000 update has a story about the Hayfork Trail Ride Communications and A Voice contact to the Space Station from Trinity that day.

WEBSITE ADDRESS & EMAIL

The TCARC website courtesy of TCDOE is located at http://tcoe.trinity.k12.ca.us/~tcarc/ if you do not have your newsletter handy, you might be able to remember "Trinitycam". If you go to http://www.trinitycam.com you will find a link to TCARC in the link list. You can also find a webcam view of the mountains North of Weaverville and lots of Trinity County Information. Send the URL to your out of area friends and family, they can see how Trinity looks through the Webcam. (There are also regularly blatant pro-ham radio recruitment for TCARC articles on the website.).

If you have e-mail and want to be on the TCARC email list, contact Greg, WB6FZH, wb6fzh@arrl.net, there are updates and information between issues of the newsletter, you may also be listed in the E-MAIL DIRECTORY of members and friends of TCARC. Coming Soon!...the "trinitycountyarc" e-mail reflector.

CLASSIC RADIO

Here is a photo of a restored semi-automatic key. This unit was compared with many commercial models from 1925 to 1955. It appears to be a "no-name special", that is that it has mechanical parts from several manufacturers, and a poorly machined base.
circa 1930 bug type key
It was comletely disassembled, steel base sanded and primed, then wrinkle black painted with an electric heater blowing hot air on it as it dried to insure some wrinkle. The mixture of plated and unplated brass adjustments reflected many years of use. The original index finger key knob is show, with a replica of the bakalite lever, made of red plastic cut from a 1950s toy. The sliding weight is set for about 20 WPM, and was recently used with a 1 watt QRP transmitter that is smaller than the key itself. COME TO THE MEETINGS..and you will see this and other interesting items!
