Hires Root Beer was made in 1890, in Philadelphia. It is America's original root beer. It is the oldest, continuously marketed soft drink in the United States. It began as a tea with the ingredients of roots, herbs and berries. It was a cure for sicknesses, like soothing nerves, vitalizing blood, and refreshing your brain.
Mr. Charles E. Hires started out as a drug store boy when he was
12 and went to Philadelphia at the age of 16. He believed that
business life was full of opportunities for those who were shrewd
enough to see them and energetic enough to grasp them. He perfected
his recipe in his drugstore in the 1870's and decided to call
his drink "root beer" to get more minors to buy it.
Now the root beer is different. Now it is known as a "soda
pop". The bottle and drink are different too. The bottle
has more information, there is different ingredients, it's plastic,
and it has fizz.
The miners used it a lot. People might have gone to the store
and bought "Hires Root Beer" for a treat.
