Burnt Ranch School
and Willow Creek-China Flat Museum
Work on 2nd Joint Project

Burnt Ranch Schools third and fourth graders are currently working on a year long project with the Willow Creek-China Flat Museum. For the first activity we took a field trip to the museum and took digital photos of historical Native American artifacts to study.

We have now completed our second project researching Gold Rush artifacts. They again took digital photos of their project. Each student researched the artifact using the internet, written, and oral resources.

Some students chose to learn more about the process of collecting gold. Research was completed on the following:

Giant/Monitor

Minor's Candle

Quicksilver Retort

Gold Scales

Molten Metal Ladle

Others chose to learn about protection and hunting, including:

Marlin Rifle

Colt Lighting Rifle

Some students chose to study old bottles, such as:

Foster's Stomach Bitters

Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound

Hire's Root Beer

Several students learned about miscellaneous items of the gold rush era, which included:

an eye scope

a gold necklace

horse bells

philosophy book
