This is the first time for our new column. Each month we will publish what we hope is interesting and useful information about the role of our office, the services we provide, and about education topics in general - especially as they pertain to Trinity County. This month the report below is from our school nursing department on requirements for student admission to schools. Because our schools do not have the funding to support their own school nurses, we provide nursing services to all districts in our county.

All California schools are required to check immunization records for all new student admissions from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten through 12th grade. Additionally, all students advancing to 7th grade will also have their immunizations records checked prior to enrollment (regardless of whether or not the student is new to the school; this applies to continuing students). See the requirements below:

Students enrolled who are aged 4-6 years will need the following immunizations:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis(DTaP, DTP, or DT) —Five doses
(Four doses will be acceptable if one was given on or after the 4th birthday)
  • Polio(OPV or IPV)—Four doses
(Three doses will be acceptable if one was given on or after 4th birthday)
  • Hepatitis B—Three doses
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella(MMR)—Two doses
(Both given on or after 1st birthday)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)—One dose

Students enrolled who are aged 7-17 years will need the following immunizations:

  •  Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis(DTaP, DTP, DT, Tdap, or Td)—Four doses
  • (Three doses will be acceptable if the last dose was given on or after 2nd birthday)
  • Polio(OPV or IPV)—Four doses
